Freight Forwarding – Shipping Steam Engines to the USA

As a well-established freight forwarder, Mercator Cargo has encountered some interesting cargo since operations began in 1991.

One recent shipping task we were asked to assist with was the export of four 1920’s steam engines.  Our duties included arranging the collection, loading, packing and sea freight shipping to the USA.  Due to the nature of the engines and the age, it was essential that special measures were in place to ensure that the engines were completely protected during handling and transit.  We arranged for experienced packers to put in place wooden blocks nailed to the shipping container floor, and strap the engines down to ensure their safety.

It was essential to ensure the safe carriage and loading into the shipping container for transport by ocean freight to the USA.  It was very much a labour of love for all involved, not least the owner of the machines in the USA who has spent many long years locating these machines, and paid substantial amounts of money for them – some of them are very rare – one in particular is one of only two working models in the world.

If you have an unusual shipping request, then get in touch, our experienced team of freight forwarders enjoy a challenge – our MD’s motto is “there is no such thing as can’t”. Call us today to discuss your shipping needs – Tel. 02392 756 575. Email: sales@mercatorcargo.co.uk.

Freight Forwarders – Shipping to the USA from the UK

As the UK’s export market grows, first time exporters are looking to the States for business opportunities.  Shipping goods to the USA from the UK has many benefits to a growing company.  Obviously the biggest impact exporting has on a small to medium business is the growth in revenue and increased production as a result of demand for the goods.

There are also specific benefits to trading with the USA:

  • There is no real language barrier.  Admittedly, the international business language is English, but still it can be challenging dealing with a business partner who’s native tongue is not English;
  • The time difference between the UK and the USA are not too great to disrupt communication.  New York time is 5 hours behind the UK, and the biggest difference is the West Coast, where the time difference is about 8 hours;
  • Sea freight sailings to the USA are relatively straight forward, and do not take as long as Australia for example (up to 50 days).  Sea freight sailings vary from 7 days to New York to 31 days to Los Angeles;
  • There are daily air freight departures from the UK to all over the USA, so no matter where your goods are destined, there is likely to be an international airport nearby for your goods to arrive at;
  • The USA is a vast country with a huge population of over 300 million.  If you can break into this market, there is a huge opportunity for your small business to grow to be bigger and better than ever;
  • Without being stereotypical, the Americans are fans of the British.  If you have a British made product, whether it is chocolates or furniture, you may be onto a winner.

We are a family-run and managed shipping agent, our team of experienced export freight forwarders deal with shipping to the USA on a daily basis.  Whether your goods require transit via sea or air freight, we can offer a comprehensive freight forwarding service for your shipping to the USA.

Give the export team a call today to discuss your freight forwarding needs for shipping to the USA, we can provide you with a quotation and advice relating to your shipment with us – Tel. 02392 756 575. Email: sales@mercatorcargo.co.uk.

Freight Forwarder – Ship to New York

If you are searching for a freight forwarder to ship your goods to New York, then look no further.  Mercator Cargo is a well-established freight forwarder that has been in operation for over 20 years.  We have a small, but expert team to help you ship your goods to New York, USA.  We regularly ship customers’ goods to New York from the UK, so are well placed to handle your shipment.

There are a few options when it comes to shipping to New York from the UK.  The first decision to make is whether your goods should transit via sea or air.  The most obvious difference is, of course, the time scales.  For example a typical shipment time from UK to New York is around 7 to 10 days from Southampton or Felixstowe Docks.  Whereas an air shipment to New York from the UK takes a matter of hours.

If your load to be shipped to New York is particularly big (i.e. 20 foot or 40 foot container), and not very urgent, then you might consider a shipment via sea freight (as this generally will be a better priced option compared to air freight depending on cargo size).  However, if you have an urgent shipment, or a particularly small shipment (i.e. a light pallet), then air freight might be more favourable.

Once your goods arrive in New York, they will need to be cleared through customs, this is a service we can also offer, in partnership with our agents based in New York.  We can then arrange for your shipment to be delivered to its final destination in the USA.

If you have some goods to be shipped from the UK to New York contact us today to discuss your requirements and obtain a quotation – Tel. 02392 756 575. Email: sales@mercatorcargo.co.uk.

Freight Forwarding News – Los Angeles Port Developments

The Port of Los Angeles on the West cost of America is the country’s busiest container port.  A new project is underway to improve rail links at the container port.  The developments will create new jobs and allow for more straight forward routes out of the port.

The container port’s new and improved rail links aim to decrease its carbon footprint, whilst offering a more efficient service to transport containers to and from the freight forwarding port.

The improved rail links are intended to reduce congestion on the roads to and from the container port.  The total cost of the rail improvements are estimated to be in the region of $138 million.

The benefits are anticipated to outweigh this cost, making the area a nicer place to work, live and do business in.

It is envisaged that the development will be complete in the middle of 2014.

Mercator can arrange shipments to the USA via the Port of Los Angeles.  Sea freight transit time to Los Angeles from a UK port is approximately 31 days.  Ocean freight from the UK to the Port of Los Angeles sails via the Panama Canal.
