Severe ice conditions are affecting Ocean Freight shipments to Russia and St. Petersburg. Freight forwarders have been warned that ice could last until the middle of May. This is because wind is now coming from the north and west, compacting the ice.

Freight forwarders have been recommended to use other neighbouring ports for some time to come. There has also been severe congestion in St. Petersburg as a result.

Although pack ice now covers most of the eastern Baltic region, neighbouring gateways in Finland, Estonia and Latvia were still good substitutes. St Petersburg’s ice is worse because of its shallow waters.

Several operators have been forced to introduce an emergency winter surcharge for cargo to/from St Petersburg and Rig.
