Mercator was instructed to arrange a cross trade shipment for our customer based in the UK of three shipping containers from Slovenia to Australia.  A cross trade shipment is when a shipment does not pass through the country that the seller is based in.

Thanks to our founding membership of the freight forwarder network MarcoPoloLine, we have a partnership with a freight forwarder based in Koper, Slovenia.  In conjunction with our colleagues in Slovenia we arranged the delivery of the shipping cntainers to the exporter’s yard for loading.  Once the shipping containers were loaded ready for export, we arranged for the units to be delivered to Koper port for loading onto a vessel.

Our partner office in Slovenia arranged the export declarations and paperwork locally and booked the containers onto the next sea freight vessel for shipping to Australia.  The routing was Koper to Melbourne which took 45 days port to port.  Once the shipping containers arrived in Australia our agent handed the documentation over to the nominated customs clearance and delivery agent for the onward journey.

Are you looking for a price to send a shipping container to Australia from the UK?  You can complete our quote form here and one of our export team will contact you with costings.  In order for us to provide you with an accurate price for sending a shipping container to Australia, we will need to know the following information:

–          The pick-up point in the UK of your cargo;
–          Whether you require assistance to pack the shipping container;
–          The nature of the goods (so that we are able to advise on special requirements (if any) for example documents, fumigation, or whether the goods are restricted for import into Australia);
–          Whether you require us to arrange delivery of your shipping container ‘to door’ in Australia (and if so, the ZIP code for this);
–          Whether you are responsible for customs clearance of the goods;
–          Whether you are responsible for paying any import taxes in Australia;
–          Whether you require marine insurance on the goods;
–          And finally when your goods are ready, or a time limit you have to get the shipping container to Australia (transit time via sea freight from the UK to Australia is approximately 50 days – it’s a long way! – If your shipment is more urgent, we can look at air freight as a speedier alternative).

Don’t be put off by the long list of information we require, the more information we know and the better we understand your shipment, the more likely we are able to offer you a smooth transit of your shipping container from the UK to Australia.

If you are shopping around for a freight forwarder, be weary if these questions are not asked upon quotation (as there may be hidden charges).  When Mercator provides you with a price for your shipping container to Australia, generally it will be broken down so you know exactly what is and isn’t included in your quotation.

As an experienced freight forwarder, Mercator Cargo handles regular air and sea freight shipments to Australia.  Generally, sea freight shipping to Australia can take up to 50 days, depending upon which port the vessel calls at.  Some vessels will call by several ports, whilst others will just stop at one or two, for example Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane, to name a few.

Our local partner in Australia has handled many shipments in conjunction with Mercator Cargo.  The benefit of having a freight forwarding point of contact in Australia is their local knowledge and abilities to arrange a ‘to door’ shipment once arrived in Australia.

Shipping to Sydney, for example, can be arranged whereby your cargo is loaded onto a vessel which calls at Sydney, to reduce trucking time.  Once your container shipment has arrived in Sydney, arrangements to deliver the cargo to its final destination can be implemented.

Australia is a vast country, and whereas, for example, if you are shipping goods into the UK, there isn’t a great difference if the vessel calls at Southampton or Felixstowe, the difference between Perth and Brisbane is vast.  It is best to arrange for your shipping to Australia to arrive at the port nearest the cargo’s final destination.

We can also arrange air freight shipping to Australia, arriving in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Adelaide.  Air freight takes 24 hours from leaving London to arriving in Australia.  Obviously air freight comes at a premium, so unless the shipment for Australia is urgent, or much smaller than a pallet or container, then sea freight tends to be the method of transit most choose.

Upon your shipments arrival in the Australian port, the cargo will be checked, along with the documents, packing list, and cleared through customs.  Depending upon what has been agreed with your buyer, there may be GST and duty to pay to clear the shipment through customs.
