As a well-established freight forwarder, Mercator Cargo has encountered some interesting cargo since operations began in 1991.

One recent shipping task we were asked to assist with was the export of four 1920’s steam engines.  Our duties included arranging the collection, loading, packing and sea freight shipping to the USA.  Due to the nature of the engines and the age, it was essential that special measures were in place to ensure that the engines were completely protected during handling and transit.  We arranged for experienced packers to put in place wooden blocks nailed to the shipping container floor, and strap the engines down to ensure their safety.

It was essential to ensure the safe carriage and loading into the shipping container for transport by ocean freight to the USA.  It was very much a labour of love for all involved, not least the owner of the machines in the USA who has spent many long years locating these machines, and paid substantial amounts of money for them – some of them are very rare – one in particular is one of only two working models in the world.

If you have an unusual shipping request, then get in touch, our experienced team of freight forwarders enjoy a challenge – our MD’s motto is “there is no such thing as can’t”. Call us today to discuss your shipping needs – Tel. 02392 756 575. Email: sales@mercatorcargo.co.uk.

The Port of Los Angeles on the West cost of America is the country’s busiest container port.  A new project is underway to improve rail links at the container port.  The developments will create new jobs and allow for more straight forward routes out of the port.

The container port’s new and improved rail links aim to decrease its carbon footprint, whilst offering a more efficient service to transport containers to and from the freight forwarding port.

The improved rail links are intended to reduce congestion on the roads to and from the container port.  The total cost of the rail improvements are estimated to be in the region of $138 million.

The benefits are anticipated to outweigh this cost, making the area a nicer place to work, live and do business in.

It is envisaged that the development will be complete in the middle of 2014.

Mercator can arrange shipments to the USA via the Port of Los Angeles.  Sea freight transit time to Los Angeles from a UK port is approximately 31 days.  Ocean freight from the UK to the Port of Los Angeles sails via the Panama Canal.

The freight forwarding port of Charleston, South Carolina in the USA, has seen a recent increase in shipping container traffic; handling over 1.5 million equivalents of 20ft containers at its two container terminals last year.

Charleston container port has been named the fastest growing container port on the USA’s East Coast between January and November last year.  This increase in size and capacity makes it an ideal port for freight forwarders to ship cargo via sea freight to and from for an efficient and reliable service.

Part of the port’s successes in the increase of container traffic is due to the improved export services and new carrier services to places such as Vietnam and Australia via ocean freight.  These improved links between (for example) the USA and Vietnam add to the sea freight forwarding list of options of routes and destination ports.

Charleston container port has stated that it wishes to continue this growth, in particular increasing refrigerated cargo (in refrigerated containers sometimes known as reefers), forest and agricultural products and container imports for e-commerce retailers.
