CPTPP – Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

The CPTPP is a trade agreement currently involving 12 countries around the world: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

The aim of the CPTPP is to offer preferential tariffs on certain goods between the countries party to the agreement.  The UK officially joined in December 2024.  Currently, the UK can benefit from preferential tariffs when trading with the following countries in the agreement:

  • Australia
  • Brunei
  • Chile
  • Japan
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Peru
  • Singapore
  • Vietnam

The UK is currently waiting for Mexico and Canada to ratify the UK joining CPTPP.  Talks are ongoing for Costa Rica to join the agreement in the future.

If you are currently importing from one of the countries mentioned above, you can check whether the commodity you purchase qualifies for preferential import duty rates by searching for the commodity code in the UK trade tariff and selecting the country of origin.  In order to claim preference under CPTPP, you will require the correct paperwork from your supplier at origin, such as a Certificate of Origin, your freight forwarder and/or customs agent (such as Mercator) will be able to advise you.

If you have imports from a CPTPP member country and you are looking for a freight forwarder to handle the shipping process including the UK import customs clearance, get in touch with our team who will be happy to provide you with a quote.  You can get in touch with our team by calling (+44) 02392 756 575, emailing sales@mercatorcargo.co.uk or by completing the form below and we will be in touch.
