UK freight forwarder Mercator handles exports to South America on a regular basis. We were recently asked to handle the shipment of a full container load – FCL to Costa Rica.
The goods (UK produced soft drinks) were sold on CFR (cost and freight) incoterm. This means that the UK exporter was responsible for the goods from their door in the UK up to the port in Costa Rica.

Mercator’s export team were appointed to arrange the FCL to Costa Rica, and so we organised for the empty 40’ high cube container to be delivered to the exporter for loading, transport of the loaded and sealed FCL to London Gateway port, VGM (verified gross mass) declaration, export customs clearance and sea freight to Costa Rica. Once the FCL to Costa Rica arrived at Puerto Limon port, the responsibility and risk transferred to the importer in Costa Rica.
Sea freight transit time from the UK to Costa Rica is around 28 days port to port, adding a few days either side for cut-offs and clearances. Transit time will depend on routing, and origin and destination ports. There are several shipping lines which route from the UK to Costa Rica, and generally departures are weekly.
Our team also handles less than container (LCL) loads and air freight to Costa Rica. So whether you have a smaller consignment not suitable for FCL to Costa Rica, or an urgent shipment, our team will be able to assist you. Thanks to our founding membership of the freight forwarding network MarcoPoloLine, we have strong connections with our partner agent based in San Jose, meaning we can team up and offer to door services (DAP or DDP) when it comes to FCL to Costa Rica.
Our team have all been in the industry for the majority of their careers, and in our organisation for several years, so you can be sure that you will receive excellent service combined with knowledge and experience.
