Freight forwarder Mercator was recently appointed by a UK importer to handle the shipment of a piece of machinery on a 40’ flat rack from South Africa. The UK importer purchased the machinery on an EXW (ex-works) basis, making them solely reliable for the transportation from door to door, including customs clearances.
Ordinarily the seller of the machinery would oblige to load and lash the machinery to the flat rack from South Africa, however, in this instance they did not have the facilities on site to do so. Instead, the UK importer negotiated a compromise whereby the seller delivered the machine to a loading yard in Durban. Once the machinery had arrived at the loading yard, we instructed our partner agent in South Africa to load and lash to the 40’ flat rack for shipping to the UK from Durban port.

Our agent located in Johannesburg was able to handle the process of export of the flat rack from South Africa, including export customs clearance, loading and lashing, delivery of the flat rack to the port and sea freight from South Africa to the UK.
Once the cargo arrived in the UK, our team settled the UK landing charges with the shipping line, completed import customs clearance, including settling UK import VAT with HMRC and delivery to the importer’s door.
