Mercator’s import team recently arranged reefer shipping from China on a door to door basis. A 40’ reefer was utilised for this shipment as the goods (paintballs) were temperature sensitive. The reefer container was set to 18 degrees Celsius to prevent the goods from spoiling in transit.
Our UK based customer purchased the goods on EXW (ex-works), meaning they were responsible for the entire shipment from door to door. In conjunction with our partner agent in China (thanks to our founding membership of the freight forwarding network MarcoPoloLine), the goods were loaded into the reefer container, export customs clearance in China was completed, and the box was set for sail to the UK.
Transit time from China varies depending on which port in China, in this instance from Yantian to Southampton, the transit time was 41 days. A shipment from a port further North in China, such as Qingdao, could be 45-50 days depending upon routing and ports of call.
Once the reefer shipping from China arrived at Southampton port, our import team completed customs clearance in-house under our AEO status, utilising our specialist software and direct links with Southampton port. Our UK customs clearance service includes settling payment to HMRC for import VAT and duty. Upon UK customs clearance, we arranged for the reefer to be collected and devanned at a nearby warehouse so that the pallets could be delivered on a truck more suited to the customer’s site – with the temperature control not being an issue in the UK as the goods were delivered in the autumn months.
