Mercator’s export team recently arranged sea freight to Canada of a 40’ high cube container containing UK manufactured components.
The UK exporter’s customer in Canada purchased the goods on cost and freight (CFR) incoterm, which means the UK exporter was responsible for the shipment from door up to the port in Canada (including UK export customs clearance). Mercator handled everything for the UK exporter, ensuring the paperwork was completed correctly to hand the shipment over to the Canadian freight forwarder working on behalf of the Canadian customer.
Once the UK exporter instructed the shipment with our export team, we got to work obtaining the vessel schedules and availability for sea freight to Canada. We then liaised with the exporter to agree a loading date in sufficient time to reach the desired sailing. When the shipping container was loaded and returned to port by our haulier, Mercator completed the UK export customs and verified gross mass (VGM) in order to be loaded onto the shipping vessel for sea freight to Canada.

Sea freight to Canada’s east coast is relatively short, with transit times from as little as 10 days port to port. This particular consignment was routed out of Liverpool and arrived into Montreal, Canada. There are weekly sailings from most of the major UK ports to the ports on the East Coast of Canada, including Montreal and Toronto. There are sailings to the West Coast of Canada from the UK, routing via the Panama canal and taking around 40 days port to port.
Mercator has a partner agent based in Toronto who we have worked with for many years thanks to our membership of the freight forwarder network MarcoPoloLine. This connection allows us to be able to offer our customers a seamless service when it comes to sea freight to Canada, covering all incoterms, even DDP (delivered duty paid – i.e. full door to door). By appointing Mercator, you can have just one dedicated contact within our team who can handle the whole process of your sea freight to Canada.
